Recording a DD214

The Indiana State Statue IC 10-17-2 allows you to safeguard your discharge papers by filing them in the County Recorder’ Office. This service is free of charge to you. The original documents or a Veteran’s Administration certified copy may be filed Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. When your papers have been recorded, the original documents will be returned to you and along with a recorded copy.

Obtaining a certified copy of a DD214

Certified copies of the DD214 can be obtained from the Recorder’s Office at no additional cost to you, IF your DD214 was recorded with our office. You can contact the Recorder’s Office Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM to see if your DD214 had been recorded. You can reach our office at (765) 641-9613.


A person requesting a copy of a discharge must be the veteran listed on the discharge and photographic identification must be provided. If not, a County Recorder may provide a certified copy of a discharge record only to the following persons: 

  1. A person who provides a photo ID that identifies the person as a county/city service officer;

  2. A person who provides a photo ID that identifies the person as an employee of the Indiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs;

  3. A person who is a funeral director licensed under IC 25-15 and assists with the burial of the veteran who is the subject of the discharge record if the person provides a photo ID and the person’s funeral director license;

  4. If the veteran who is the subject of the discharged record is deceased, the spouse or next of kin of the deceased, if the spouse or next of kin provides a photo ID and a copy of the veteran’s death certificate;

  5. The following persons, if the person provides a photo ID:

a. The attorney in fact of the person who is the subject of the discharge record, if the attorney in fact provides a copy of the power of attorney;​

b. The guardian of the person who is the subject of the discharge record, if the guardian of the person provides a copy of the court order appointing the guardian of the person;

c. The personal representative of the estate of the deceased, if the person who is the subject of the discharge record is deceased and the personal representative of the estate provides a copy of the court order appointing the personal representative of the estate.

You can request the DD214 by using the button below or come into the Recorder’s Office and we will set you up at a station to fill out the form.

If your DD214 is lost and has not been recorded with our office, you can contact The National Archives and Records Administration is the official depository for records of military personnel separated from the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Marine Corps. You may obtain an official copy by contacting the National Personnel Records Center, Military Personnel Records at:
